Meeting Jason de Vos
Today, I was lucky and fortunate to meet a former Canadian national team defender and Ipswich Town legend, Jason de Vos.
Jason was born in London, Ontario and is one of the prides of the town. He started his career with his hometown club, the London Lasers, who performed in the former Canadian Soccer League (CSL). He then moved to the Kitchener Kickers of the same league.
Jason spent 3 years (1993-1996) playing with the Montreal Impact in the American Professional Soccer League before being loaned to English side Darlington for 2 years (1996-1998).
Jason would then take his career overseas permanently, signing with Scottish Premier League side Dundee United.
Later, after 3 seasons in Scotland, Jason signed with Second Division English club Wigan, captaining them to their promotion to First Division in 2002-2003.
In 2004, de Vos joined Ipswich Town on a Bosman transfer and held a regular spot in the back of the defense. In 2006, Jason was appointed captain of Ipswich Town and led his side until his retirement from soccer in 2008. Jason made 171 caps for Ipswich scoring 10 goals.
Jason was a regular on the Canadian national team, securing 49 caps and scoring 4 goals. He also would lead Canada to a CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000.
Jason resides in his hometown of London, Ontario where he is a commentator for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and is also a scout for his former club Ipswich Town.
Cheers.
JC.
